Twins defeat White Sox 2-1 in 12 innings

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Joe Mauer drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift Minnesota over Chicago.

Dan Jennings (4-3) hit Eddie Rosario with a full-count pitch to lead off the 12th. One out later, Byron Buxton walked. Reliever Tommy Kahnle then came on and walked Brian Dozier and Mauer to push across the winning run. Trevor May (2-2) pitched a perfect 12th.

Adam Eaton put the White Sox on the board early when he led off the game with a long home run to right-center field. After that, however, only one White Sox runner reached second base against Nolasco.

Kennys Vargas drove in a run with a blooper to short right field in the sixth. However, Miguel Sano, who had doubled, ran through a stop sign at third base and Eaton's throw easily beat him to the plate.

Cubs defeat Mariners 12-1

CHICAGO (AP) Jon Lester recovered from a rut of bad starts, pitching six shutout innings to help the Chicago Cubs rout the Seattle Mariners 12-1 on Friday for their third straight victory.

Jason Heyward and David Ross homered and the NL Central leaders improved to 10-5 since a 1-9 slump.

Seattle lost in its first trip to Wrigley Field since 2007. The Mariners let infielder Luis Sardinas pitch the eighth, and he threw a perfect inning.

Lester (11-4) had lasted just 16 innings over his previous four starts, going 1-1 with a 10.13 ERA. That skid came after he had gone 9-3 with a 2.03 ERA in his first 16 starts. Lester gave up four hits, struck out seven and walked two. He was already done when there was a 74-minute rain delay in the seventh.

Chicago's Kris Bryant reached base all five times he came up. He singled twice, doubled and walked twice. Hisashi Iwakuma (11-7) was the loser.

Cubs defeat White Sox 3-1

CHICAGO (AP) — Chris Sale returned from his jersey-trashing suspension and threw six effective innings, but John Lackey outpitched him and Aroldis Chapman got the final four outs to save the Cubs' 3-1 victory over the White Sox in Chicago's rivalry series Thursday night.

Sale (14-4) was greeted with smiles and hugs from his teammates following a five-day ban for tearing up 1976-style uniforms he didn't want to wear before his previous scheduled start. He had command issues, but worked out of trouble while allowing two runs and six hits.

Lackey (8-7) allowed one run in six innings for his first win since June 8. Chapman, in his second appearance since being acquired from the Yankees, struck out two and consistently hit 102 mph in his first save for his new team.

Kris Bryant, who homered against Sale in the All-Star Game, hit an RBI double off the center field wall in the first inning. Ben Zobrist added an RBI single in the third and doubled and scored in the eighth as the Cubs earned a split of the four-game series and spoiled Sale's night.

The lefty was scratched from his start Saturday, sent home and then suspended five days for cutting up a number of collared throwback jerseys the team was supposed to wear for the game. Sale said they were uncomfortable and became enraged when the team wouldn't switch them out.

White Sox reinstate Chris Sale from suspended list and option Anthony Ranaudo to class AAA Charlotte

Prior to tonight's game at the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago White Sox reinstated left-hander pitcher Chris Sale from the suspended list. He takes the roster spot of right-hander Anthony Ranaudo, who was optioned to Class AAA Charlotte following last night's game. Sale is scheduled to start tonight's game at Wrigley Field.

Sale, 27, has been on the suspended list since July 23. He is 14-3 with a 3.18 ERA (47 ER/133.0 IP), three complete games, 1.01 WHIP, .216 opponents average and 129 strikeouts over 19 starts with the White Sox this season. Sale ranks among the American League leaders in wins (T1st), complete games (T1st), WHIP (T1st), opponents average (3rd), winning percentage (T4th, .824), quality starts (5th, 13), opponents OPS (6th, .629), IP (7th), strikeouts (7th) and ERA (8th).

Ranaudo, 26, made his White Sox debut last night at Wrigley Field, suffering the loss after allowing three runs on just two hits (both home runs) over 6.2 IP. Ranaudo held the Cubs hitless through the first five innings, and hit his first career home run, a solo shot in the fifth inning. He has gone 5-3 with a 3.20 ERA (28 ER/78.2 IP), two complete games and 53 strikeouts over 13 starts with Charlotte this season.

Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.

Cubs beat White Sox 8-1

CHICAGO (AP) — Javier Baez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer deep into Wrigley's Field's left bleachers in the seventh, Addison Russell added a grand slam in a five-run eighth and the Chicago Cubs beat the White Sox 8-1 on Wednesday night.

Jason Hammel (10-5) allowed one run and five hits while striking out seven in seven innings. Hector Rondon pitched a perfect eighth, and Aroldis Chapman worked a 1-2-3 ninth — striking out Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia — in his Cubs debut.

Baez went deep on a full-count pitch against Anthony Ranaudo (1-1) to chase the right-hander in his White Sox debut. Ranaudo didn't allow a hit until Kris Bryant's solo homer with one out in the sixth tie the score 1-1. Bryant's 26th homer matched his total last season when he was NL Rookie of the Year.

After Ben Zobrist's RBI double in the eighth, Russell followed two hitters later with his 12th homer to help the Cubs end a two-game slide and snap the White Sox's four-game winning streak.

Ranaudo allowed three runs and two hits — both homers — in 6 2/3 innings and smacked an opposite-field homer in the fifth for his first major league hit.

Chapman had 20 saves in 21 chances this season with the Yankees before the Cubs acquired the hard-throwing lefty on Monday for a package of prospects.

White Sox shut out Cubs 3-0

CHICAGO (AP) - James Shields allowed four singles in 7 2/3 innings, Adam Eaton homered and the White Sox stayed unbeaten since Chris Sale's suspension.

The Cubs lost their second straight and never got to use new closer Aroldis Chapman hours after he joined the team and struggled answering questions related to an altercation last year with his girlfriend.

Shields (5-12) struck out five and continued an impressive turnaround from a terrible first three starts after being acquired from San Diego last month. Nate Jones finished the eighth and David Robertson worked the ninth for his 24th save in the White Sox's fourth straight win since their ace was sent home for destroying throwback jerseys.

Jose Abreu had two hits, including an RBI single in the first off Kyle Hendricks (9-7) that ended his streak of 22 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

CHICAGO (AP) — Tyler Saladino held out his arms as the Chicago White Sox poured out of the dugout to mob him near second base.

The Chicago Cubs definitely could have used Aroldis Chapman on Monday night.

Saladino hit a game-ending RBI single, and the White Sox put a damper on the Cubs' trade for Chapman with a 5-4 victory.

"It was a lot of fun, a lot of energy there and it felt really good to get that done for the guys," Saladino said.

J.B. Shuck sparked the winning rally with a leadoff single against Mike Montgomery (3-5), who was acquired in a deal with Seattle last Wednesday. Shuck advanced on Dioner Navarro's sacrifice and Saladino followed with a bouncer into center field.

Dan Jennings (4-2) got two outs for the win. Coupled with two late victories against Detroit on Sunday, it was the first time since August 1962 that the White Sox had won three consecutive games in their last at-bat, according to STATS LLC.

"We've been all over the place," manager Robin Ventura said. "These guys are resilient. They fight back, they come every day to play hard. You need some stuff to go your way and I think tonight was one of those."

The Cubs trailed 4-2 before Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo each hit an RBI single in the ninth. They had runners on first and second with two out when Jennings struck out Jason Heyward to escape the threat.

Javier Baez hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, who were coming off a nice weekend series in Milwaukee.

Todd Frazier hit a three-run drive off Jake Arrieta and Miguel Gonzalez pitched 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball, helping the White Sox improve to 5-5 in interleague play. Melky Cabrera made an outstanding leaping catch in the first, robbing Kris Bryant of a home run.

"It wasn't a really hard fly ball, it was more high and I tracked the ball perfectly," Cabrera said.

Moments after he lost his bat into the stands in the sixth, Frazier drove the next pitch from Arrieta over the wall in center for his 29th homer. He also connected against Arrieta last year, when the ace right-hander allowed just 10 homers all year long on his way to the NL Cy Young Award.

"Just need to execute better there," Arrieta said.

The NL Central-leading Cubs had won seven of 10 after a midseason slide, and they bolstered their already solid bullpen with the acquisition of the hard-throwing Chapman in a trade with the Yankees on Monday. The left-hander is expected to join the Cubs for Tuesday night's game against the White Sox.

"When you make a maneuver like this, it's got to be obvious that it's going to be very helpful," manager Joe Maddon said, "and it's very obvious that this will be."

Chasing their first World Series title since 1908, the Cubs sent top shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres, versatile pitcher Adam Warren and minor league outfielders Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford to New York for Chapman, who has 166 saves and a 2.16 ERA in seven years in the majors.

"It's an aggressive move," president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. "It was tough to give up what we gave up, but if not now, when? This is the appropriate move given where we are and what we're trying to accomplish."

While Chapman gives Chicago a shutdown reliever for its bullpen, the Cubs are still looking for Arrieta to get back on track. He pitched seven crisp innings against the Mets in his previous start, but allowed four runs in six innings against the White Sox and has just one win in his last six outings.

WORTH NOTING

White Sox closer David Robertson, who had pitched three times in two days, was unavailable.

SALE'S RETURN

White Sox ace Chris Sale will start on Thursday at Wrigley Field in his first appearance since he was suspended for five days for destroying collared throwback uniforms the team was scheduled to wear. The 27-year-old Sale was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against Detroit and sent home after he cut up an unknown number of jerseys before the game. The 1976-style jerseys were navy and sported unusual collars on a hot and humid night.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Cubs: SS Addison Russell was in the starting lineup a day after he departed Chicago's 6-5 victory at Milwaukee with a left heel contusion.

White Sox: 2B Brett Lawrie (strained left hamstring) missed his fourth consecutive game, but Ventura said he was available in an emergency. ... LHP Carlos Rodon (sprained left wrist) allowed two earned runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte. He also had a throwing error.

UP NEXT

Cubs RHP Kyle Hendricks (9-6, 2.27 ERA) looks to continue his breakout year on Tuesday night against White Sox RHP James Shields (4-12, 4.99 ERA). Hendricks is 5-0 with a sparkling 0.72 ERA in his last seven games, six starts. Shields has dropped each of his last three starts, but has a 2.08 ERA in 21 2/3 innings during the slide.

Cubs defeat Brewers 6-5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run double in the seventh inning and Joe Nathan got the win in his first game in the majors since April 2015.

Nathan was activated off the 60-day disabled list earlier in the day, completing his comeback from Tommy John surgery.

The Cubs broke through against the Brewers bullpen after struggling with runners in scoring position against starter Junior Guerra.

Tommy La Stella went 3 for 3 for Chicago. He had an RBI double before Will Smith (1-3) walked Kris Bryant to load the bases for Rizzo. He hit a 2-2 slider down in the zone into right-center to clear the bases and give Chicago a 5-4 lead.

White Sox defeat Tigers 5-4

CHICAGO (AP) Melky Cabrera drove in Adam Eaton with a game-ending single in the ninth inning after closer David Robertson gave up three home runs in the top half to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers hours after they suspended ace Chris Sale for five days on Sunday.

The White Sox beat the Tigers 4-3 earlier in the day on a single by Eaton in the ninth after play was suspended because of rain the previous night.

Robertson (2-2) got the win in that one and picked up another victory in the scheduled game despite a rough ninth inning.

The big news Sunday was Sale getting suspended and fined one day after he was scratched from his scheduled start and sent home. The punishment was handed down after he destroyed collared throwback uniforms the team was scheduled to wear in this game.

White Sox game postponed to Sunday

CHICAGO (AP) — With ace Chris Sale scratched following a clubhouse incident, the White Sox used six pitchers Saturday night before their game against the Detroit Tigers was suspended by rain after eight innings tied at 3.
The game, interrupted three times by thunderstorms, will resume Sunday before the final contest of the series.
Sale, who was to attempt to become the majors' first 15-game winner, was sent home after what the team called a "non-physical" incident before the game. FanRag Sports and other outlets reported an upset Sale destroyed collared throwback jerseys the team was scheduled to wear.
Justin Upton homered for the Tigers and Avisail Garcia hit his first homer since May 28 for the White Sox. The Tigers tied it in the eighth on Nick Castellanos' single off Nate Jones that scored Cameron Maybin, who reached on Jones' error.
David Robertson came in to get the final out in a pouring rain before the umpires called for the tarp. The game was suspended 45 minutes later.

Nieuwenhuis hits two home runs, Brewers beat Cubs 6-1

By the Associated Press.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit two home runs, Zach Davies took a shutout into the seventh inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 6-1 on Saturday night.

Jonathan Lucroy also homered, giving Milwaukee the lead with a two-run shot in the first off John Lackey (7-7). Nieuwenhuis led off the fourth with a homer to center field, extending Milwaukee's lead to 3-0. Niewenhuis' added a three-run homer to left in the eighth, marking his third career multi-homer game.

Davies (7-4) gave up one run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Lackey, who has surrendered at least one home run in seven straight starts, gave up three runs and five hits in six innings.

Davies, who pitched seven scoreless innings in his last start, retired 10 consecutive batters before yielding a single to Ben Zobrist leading off the seventh. Zobrist scored on Addison Russell's single off Will Smith, who relieved Davies with one out in the inning.

The Brewers loaded the bases with two outs in the third but Lackey escaped by striking out Chris Carter.

Milwaukee threatened again in the seventh, putting runners on second and third with one out. Cubs reliever Adam Warren then fired a pitch over catcher Willson Contreras' glove. With Hernan Perez racing down the third-base line attempting to score, Contreras retrieved the ball off of a carom and fired to Warren covering the plate, who tagged out a sliding Perez. The call was upheld after a review.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Cubs: Reliever Joe Nathan, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, will join the club Sunday, manager Joe Maddon said. The 41-year-old Nathan has been on a 30-day rehab assignment in the Cubs minor-league system but hasn't appear in a major league game since April 6, 2015, with Detroit.

Brewers: OF Domingo Santana, on the DL since June 10 with right elbow soreness, started a rehab assignment Saturday with Class-A Wisconsin.

UP NEXT

Cubs: Jon Lester (10-4, 2.89) will start against the Brewers for the first time this season and first time ever at Miller Park. In five career starts versus Milwaukee he is 2-2 with a 2.22 ERA.

Brewers: Junior Guerra (6-2, 3.06) will make his second start of the season against the Cubs. Guerra earned the victory in a May 15 start at Miller Park, giving up five hits and three runs over seven innings. He struck out a career-high 11 against Chicago.

White Sox ace Chris Sale scratched for 'clubhouse incident'

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale was scratched from his start against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night after he was involved in what the team said was a "non-physical clubhouse incident."

Sale, who was to attempt to become the majors' first 15-game winner, was sent home from the park.

FanRag Sports first reported the incident involved Sale's protest of the throwback jerseys the team was scheduled to wear. Fox Sports reported Sale cut up the throwback jerseys during batting practice.

"The incident, which was non-physical in nature, currently is under further investigation by the club," general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. "The White Sox will have no additional comment until the investigation is completed."

The White Sox marketing department described the night as the "Throwback Game." It announced the team would wear collared, blue and white V-neck jerseys first worn during the 1976 season.

The players instead wore more conventional, throwback white jerseys with no collar and no navy.

Right-hander Matt Albers started in Sale's place and the White Sox planned to use multiple relievers. The crowd booed when Albers was announced as the starter as the teams warmed up.

With the White Sox fading from playoff contention, Sale's name has been mentioned as a possible trade target for contending teams.

The left-hander, 14-3 with a 3.18 ERA, has been outspoken in the past.

Sale was openly critical of team president Ken Williams during spring training when he said the son of teammate Adam LaRoche would no longer be allowed in the clubhouse. LaRoche retired as a result, and Sale hung LaRoche's jersey in his locker.

The 27-year-old Sale has said he'd like to stay in Chicago. He was the 13th overall pick out of Florida Gulf Coast in 2010 and has been selected as an All-Star five times. He started for the American League in this month's All-Star Game.

Sale, who is 71-43 in his career, entered the day leading the majors with 133 innings pitched and three complete games.

In his last outing Monday, Sale allowed one hit over eight shutout innings before closer David Robertson gave up four runs in the ninth in Chicago's loss to Seattle.

The White Sox, who started 23-10, had dropped eight of nine games before Saturday and sat in fourth place in the AL Central, creating speculation that Sale and fellow lefty Jose Quintana could be dealt.

Tigers GM Al Avila said before the game that many teams are looking for starting pitching.

"Yet there are not as many good starting pitchers available," Avila said. "And the guys that may come available are going to come at a steep price."

Hahn said Thursday the White Sox were "mired in mediocrity" and hinted at possible big roster changes.

Cubs defeat Brewers 5-2

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Dexter Fowler led off the first with a homer and drove in three runs in his first game back from the disabled list, powering Chicago past Milwaukee.

Fowler went 3 for 4 with a walk and scored twice after being sidelined more than a month with a strained right hamstring. His two-run double to left with the bases loaded in the second drew rousing cheers from the bevy of Cubs fans visiting Milwaukee.

Jason Hammel (9-5) allowed four hits and two runs over five-plus innings for his second victory since the All-Star break for NL Central-leading Chicago. He never trailed after Fowler slugged a 3-1 pitch from Jimmy Nelson (6-8) over the center-field wall to lead off the game.

Hector Rondon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 17th save.

Hernan Perez had a run-scoring double for the Brewers, and Ryan Braun hit a solo homer.

Tigers defeat White Sox 7-5

CHICAGO (AP) — Miguel Cabrera tied a season high with four hits, including a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh, to lead Detroit past Chicago.

Cabrera's two-run single against Nate Jones put Detroit back on top after the Tigers blew a three-run lead in the fifth and sent Chicago to its eighth loss in nine games.

Ian Kinsler scored three runs, and Kyle Ryan (4-2) pitched a scoreless inning in relief after a rare shaky start by Michael Fulmer. Francisco Rodriguez worked the ninth for his 27th save in 29 chances.

Chicago's Justin Morneau hit his first home run in more than 14 months. Carson Fulmer (0-1) struggled in relief.

Anderson makes big league impact

Tim Anderson's winding road to the Big Leagues: An inside look at Tim Anderson's unconventional road to the big leagues, and the impact he's had on the White Sox as a rookie.

Pujols' 2 HRs power Angels past White Sox 8-1 for sweep

BY GREG BEACHAM (AP)

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Although Jered Weaver is pitching with a fraction of his early-career velocity, the veteran right-hander still gets victories with craft and guile.

And he never lost his curious mastery over the Chicago White Sox.

Albert Pujols hit a pair of two-run homers, Weaver pitched seven strong innings and the Los Angeles Angels completed an emphatic three-game sweep of the White Sox with an 8-1 victory Sunday.

After their worst first half since 1992, the injury-plagued Halos (40-52) returned from the All-Star break by outscoring Chicago 16-1. Los Angeles also escaped sole possession of last place in the AL West, pulling even with Oakland.

"Our motto is just to go out there and have some fun," Weaver said. "Obviously we're not in the position we'd like to be, but that's not going to deter from going out there and competing. A sweep against a team like this is a step in the right direction."

During the Angels' first series sweep since mid-May, Hector Santiago, Matt Shoemaker and Weaver (8-7) became the first consecutive Los Angeles starters to go seven innings since July 2015.

With his fastball showing a bit more speed than usual after 10 days off, Weaver beat the White Sox for the eighth time in his last eight starts against them since 2011, giving up just six hits.

"I'm still trying to get stronger, but my body is feeling a lot better," Weaver said. "It's not fun going out there and having to trick people and throw pitches that you wouldn't necessarily (want to) throw in certain counts. To have a little more of a fastball and being able to locate it keeps guys off your secondary pitches a little bit more."

Pujols connected in the first and fourth innings of his 53rd multi-homer game. He has 577 career homers as he pursues Mark McGwire (583) for 10th place on baseball's career list.

"Obviously we didn't have a great first half, but that's the way you want to start the second half," Pujols said.

Five Angels drove in a run while lighting up Jacob Turner (0-1) over the first five innings. He yielded seven hits and eight runs in his debut for the White Sox, who have lost four straight.

Chicago never threatened to do much against Weaver, who repeatedly tricked overeager hitters into harmless popups.

"You sit there and you marvel at the fact that it's not going very hard," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "Speed isn't anything to alarm you about, but he almost throws it under that, anything that's a comfortable hitting speed. He takes a little off. Big curveball. Nothing seems to be in the middle of the plate."

Omar Narvaez got his first big-league hit in his first at-bat, and he scored Chicago's first run since July 9 on Adam Eaton's double moments later in the third inning. The run ended a 34-inning scoreless streak for the White Sox, who have lost six of eight.

"We need to score runs," Ventura said. "Scoring one in a series is not going to do it for us."

GOT HIS NUMBER

Pujols improved to 4 for 4 with three homers and six RBIs in his career against Turner, who hadn't pitched in the big leagues since 2014. He got promoted from Triple-A Charlotte for a spot start because Ventura decided to give an extra day of rest to All-Star Game starter Chris Sale.

BIG BLASTS

Pujols opened the scoring with a 431-foot homer, his first since July 2. His second homer drove in Mike Trout, who snapped his longest hitless streak of the season (0 for 10) with a double off the wall moments earlier.

FIRST TASTE

Along with Narvaez, White Sox right-hander Carson Fulmer also made his big-league debut, tossing two innings of one-hit relief. The 22-year-old Fulmer, the eighth overall pick in the 2015 draft, was called up from Double-A Birmingham before the series. "It was impressive," Ventura said.

TRAINER'S ROOM

White Sox: 3B Matt Davidson (broken foot) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Turner on the roster.

Angels: Geovany Soto was scratched before the game with discomfort in his left knee.

UP NEXT

White Sox: Sale (14-3, 3.38 ERA) goes after his sixth victory in seven starts when Chicago begins a three-game series in Seattle.

Angels: Nick Tropeano (3-2, 3.12 ERA) will make his third start since returning to the rotation in early July when Los Angeles hosts Texas.

Chicago Sports Weekly Report: Cubs and White Sox both pick up wins on July 4th

CUBS 10, REDS 4

The Cubs had quite a rebound from a series where they were swept by the Mets.

Kris Bryant belted his National League-leading 24th home run, Addison Russell drove in three runs, including two on his ninth homer, and rookie Willson Contreras added a solo home run to lead the Cubs to a 10-4 victory on Monday over the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.

There was a scary moment in the fifth inning, when Bryant and center fielder Albert Almora Jr.collided in left-center. Both stayed in the game to finish the inning, but Bryant was lifted because of a bruise on his left leg.

Bryant hit a two-run homer in the second to give him eight homers and 20 RBIs against the Reds this season.

Bryant walked twice and scored three runs in the game.

Kyle Hendricks picked up the win, while Cody Reed took the loss.

WHITE SOX 8, YANKEES 2

James Shields won his second straight start, an 8-2 victory over the Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field on Monday.

CC Sabathia, who was credited with the loss, yielded home runs toTim Anderson in the third and Dioner Navarroin the fifth. Todd Frazier added three hits, including two doubles, drove in one, scored twice and reached base five times.

Carlos Rodon makes what could be his last start before the All-Star break on Tuesday at 7:10 pm CT against the Yankees. Rodon has gone 1-2 with a 3.59 ERA, 40 hits allowed, 13 walks and 45 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings over his last seven starts at home (five quality).
