37-year-old man found shot to death in Gary

A 37-year-old man was found shot to death early Wednesday in northwest Indiana.

Officers responded at 3:43 a.m. to a call of a suspicious vehicle in the 2600 block of Delaware Street in Gary, according to Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield.

Jimmie D. Spates was found inside the vehicle with at least one gunshot wound, according to Westerfield and the Lake County coroner’s office.

Spates, a Gary resident, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:03 a.m., according to the coroner’s office. His death was ruled a homicide.

Death of Gary woman ruled homicide

Police opened a homicide investigation Monday after the death of a 34-year-old woman at her northwest Indiana home.

Jamie M. Garnett was pronounced dead at 3:55 a.m. at her home in the 4400 block of West 23rd Court in Gary, according to the Lake County coroner’s office.

She was the victim of a homicide, but additional details were not provided, the coroner’s office said.

The Gary Police Department, Lake County Metro Homicide Unit and Lake County sheriff’s office were investigating.
